Overview
Lightpanda is a headless browser written in Zig and built from scratch for AI agents and automation. It is not a Chromium fork or a WebKit patch. It speaks the Chrome DevTools Protocol, so existing Playwright and Puppeteer scripts can drive it. The README reports lower memory use and faster runs than headless Chrome in its own crawl benchmark of 100 pages. Builds are offered for Linux and macOS.
Key features
- New browser engine written in Zig, not based on Chromium
- Works with Playwright and Puppeteer through CDP
- Nightly binaries for Linux and macOS on x86_64 and aarch64
- Homebrew and Arch User Repository packages
Best for
Teams running crawlers or AI agents that want a lighter alternative to headless Chrome. Linux binaries need glibc, so Alpine and Android are not supported directly. It is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
